I write from Cape Cod, MA, enjoying a little bit of R&R after a few days on the road visiting colleges in the northeast.
My first stop was Baltimore and Johns Hopkins University, one of the more competitive schools in the nation. JHU is a great school for science and engineering students, but they also have the Baltimore Museum of Art right on campus, as well as the Peobody Conservatory for students interested in studying music. If you are seriously interested in engineering, then this school must be on your list.
And, they are a generous school, meeting close to 100% of financial need. Hopkins admits only 27% of all applicants according to College Board, but over 50% of all Early Decision students are admitted, so your chances do increase if you apply early. The entire undergraduate population is just under 5,000 students.
Of particular note at Hopkins is that the Office of the President is located in the same building as the career center, indicating an emphasis on supporting students in finding careers and/or graduate placement after college.
I then paid a very brief visit to Goucher College, just up the road from Hopkins. This self-contained campus in Towson (suburban Baltimore) offers a peaceful, wooded setting just outside a major, mid-Atlantic city. Goucher used to be all women, but today about 30% of the students are men. The facilities at Goucher are state of the art, and in addition to offering a full liberal arts curriculum they also have programs in Business, Communications, as well as a wonderful performing arts program.

I later visited Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY. This small, Division I school (4700 students), situated right along the Hudson River, is an amazing blend of small and big, with the best of both.
Classes are no larger than 25 students, and the campus can be traversed from one end to the other in about 12 minutes.
Yet the school offers students the resources of a large university, with access to New York City in less than 90 minutes via train. Such proximity offers students opportunities for internships in the nation’s largest city and business and media epicenter. With great programs in business, communications, and fashion, among others, this school should be considered by students who are looking for a Division I experience yet desire a small school atmosphere.
I had an opportunity to meet with Brian Loew, admissions officer at Marist. Brian offered some valuable tips on the admissions process, which you can hear more about in the video that accompanying this post.
